I saw Wicked today with my roommates. I have Thoughts
#stupid flighty bullshit#first.#wicked spoilers#beyond this point so if you dont want to be spoiled stop reading#first of all i loved it#great movie. cynthia and ariana knocked it out of the park#i liked ethan slater's boq and michelle yeoh's madame morrible#im sorry ariana for doubting you#she did a very good job acting#jonathan bailey was fine. i still dont like him but he did fine#tbh i think i just dont like fiyero. like hes fine but the romance plot is so boring aside from the conflict that it creates between#glinda and elphaba#also make them gay. cowards#i saw that fucking. flower#im picking up the crumbs and i want more#most of the additions were kind of unnecessary tbh like. they had an extended scene with the wizard#but it made me cringe and jeff goldblum cant sing#i dont think he was a good choice for this part#also there was an additional number in one short day#kind of explaining the grimmier thing?#i dont remember how they do it in the show but I feel like that was fine?#i think they just added that part to have kristen chenoweth and idina menzel cameo#but i feel like the extra time could have been used in other places#to fill out the relationshio development more#i still dont find fiyero and elphaba convincing as a couple#i still think that elphaba and glinda jump from being enemies to besties way too quickly#like it works but wouldnt it be nice to give it more focus?#i did love the choreography during the songs#especially no one mourns the wicked and dancing through life

We all know Mrs Gulch is technically the Kansas counterpart of The Wicked Witch of the West. Then what if the equivalent of Glinda in the real world is Mrs Gulch's wife??? And like Dorothy doesen't know they're married, but does know that they live together (that's why she pictures them both as the witches of Oz) and knows Gulch is lowkey a bitch, while her wife is always so nice and caring so she subconsciously assigns the roles that way?? What if Glinda is just a little pretty lesbian motherly wife?? In this essay I will-

friends i am FROTHING AT THE MOUTH over the Nov 1 2008 Wicked boot, Carmen Cusack's penultimate 1NT show with Katie Rose Clarke
it is far and away the best boot I've seen so far in the great chronological watch and just kEPT GETTING BETTER OVER TIME
like. Carmen really gets her teeth into Elphaba and lets her be a bitch when she needs to be
and she and Katie's Galinda are just such fascinating equal-and-opposite autistic4autistic
and Deedee Magno Hall's transition from Nice Nessa to Wicked Nessa is so tangible and legible and good
and Cliffton Hall's Fiyero actually gives thropple for once
and like. it's stellar throughout, and there are so many gay little moments (KATIE KISSES CARMEN'S SHOULDER IN ONE SHORT DAY WTF) but like
after "Wonderful" it just goes. the fuck. OFF.
and by "it" i mostly mean "Katie Rose Clarke"
please forgive me these gifs will not even remotely capture it but my words alone would not do this justice
first of all the REUNION HUG they just CANNOT BEAR TO END so they KEEP FINDING NEW WAYS TO TOUCH
Tumblr media
but all good things must end, and when Elphaba and Fiyero leave Glinda is FURIOUS with them and SO HEARTBROKEN
Tumblr media
but not as furious as she is with HERSELF. I have never seen an "I'm Not That Girl (Reprise)" that is so dripping with self-hatred and like you stupid bitch of course they left you, you should have known better energy
like PLEASE look at this UNHINGED SHIT katie is doing with her head and neck about "don't wish":
Tumblr media
and then after that our big reward is one of the straight-up horniest ALAYM renditions i have EVER seen
Tumblr media
and then the catfight
THIS CATFIGHT
gifs cannot capture Carmen's delivery of "wretched little farmgirl" but know it was so perfect I was screaming and clapping
and like. ok. throughout this performance Katie does this Obvious Regret thing where like, Glinda says things aloud and then visibly immediately hears how stupid it sounds and wishes to take it back and there's nothing she can do about it (changing her name to Glinda being the biggest example, but the delivery of "FINE GO, YOU DESERVE EACH OTHER" above is ALSO a great example)
and this fight escalates so quickly because she CANNOT stop making it WORSE
Tumblr media
and she KNOWS
Tumblr media
but can't QUIT IT
Tumblr media
and then Carmen literally STOMPS THE GROUND on "by bubble"
Tumblr media
and then delivers "someone like him could actually choose someone like me" in the platonic ideal way that acknowledges thropple, the indictment of Fiyero coming with her when Glinda didn't
and then
Katie ACTUALLY SLAPS HER
SO HARD HER HAT FALLS OFF
Tumblr media
AND THEN PLEASE LOOK AT THE SLAP BACK
Tumblr media
Katie's "lemme go I almost had her" is FERAL
and afterwards she is still SO MAD that she KICKS THE BROOM
Tumblr media
EVEN HER "DO IT" IS MAD, she TURNS HER BACK ON HER
Tumblr media
but then
then it's For Good and it starts to dawn on you that it's Carmen's second to last show because she LITERALLY cannot BEAR to look at Katie (who is crying) for most of the song because she knows she'll mcfreaking lose it if she does
Tumblr media
but that's fine because when she actually DOES look at her she KISSES HER HAND
Tumblr media
I AM DEAD
this boot has ended me. ENDED ME. @theseerasures and I finished watching it and IMMEDIATELY had to go back and watch the highlights again
like I didn't even have TIME to get into this Popular
anyway uh if you're looking for a bootleg that'll really fuckin hit the spot
i STRONGLY RECOMMEND this one

there is something so gay about the song 'one short day' and the specific line:
"i think i've found the place where we belong" (sung by both glinda and elphaba)
the place where they both belong. for elphaba this makes sense. it's all green and she doesn't feel ogled at.
but for glinda? she's revered wherever she walks, be it shiz or munchkinland, she's never faced public scrutiny. so her finding comfort in the emerald city, a place that's entirely green and theatrical, and full of "wonders" that she's never seen, is strange! it seems to imply that there is something within the emerald city that allows her to be her true self.
perhaps its because she wants to be where elphaba feels most secure. she wants to be amongst the free-spirited. she has a whole boyfriend (fiyero) back at shiz, yet she feels like she belongs in the emerald city, where elphaba is able to be herself. it's also super gay because despite glinda being the standard & who people look up to, internally she seems to be going through a conflict. she cannot be herself (queer, unashamed) unless she's with elphaba.
near the end of the song, elphaba and glinda repeatedly make references to returning to the city, calling it "home" and a place to "make their way", heavily implying that the two of them would return together. they're gonna move in! and no one will judge these two women for living together and being together in any capacity.
one short day is the gay yearning to feeling accepted song of all time.

Okay so hear me out... [Massive spoilers and speculation on Wicked films ahead]
It's apparent that Wicked Part 2 is going to have new, expanded, and altered scenes — but by far the most tantalizing is implied by the first scene of the first film.
We see a cloaked figure on horseback fleeing from Kiamo Ko after the Melting, and then we see Dorothy, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, and the Scarecrow on the Yellow Brick Road back to the Emerald City. This is in keeping with the 1939 Wizard of Oz, which implies something hugely important about the plot of Wicked Part 2: the musical's original ending has been changed.
In the original stage version, Fiyero comes back to Kiamo Ko after getting his diploma brain from the Wizard and all that, and Elphaba comes out from her little trapdoor, and then they leave Oz together without telling anyone. It's unclear (on purpose, obviously), but it seems very apparent that the cloaked rider we see at the start of the 2024 film is Elphaba. This leaves us with a few possibilities for how the plot will unfold in Part 2.
1.) Elphaba simply leaves alone, telling nobody — not even Fiyero — that she's alive. I am okay with this, since honestly the way that the finale of the musical was written has always felt kinda clunky and borderline plot-holey to me.
2.) They still end up having the original ending happen, just switched around the order of some of the events. Maybe Elphaba escapes first but then finds Fiyero alone elsewhere somehow, and in the end still leaves Oz with him. I'd accept it — it is probably the most likely version they might go with — but with all the changes being made, I would be a little disappointed if it ends up this way ngl, when they have the chance to make a new ending that far surpasses the original.
3.) Elphaba leaves alone BUT makes Glinda and/or Fiyero aware of her survival somehow. This is actually a surprisingly plausible option I think, since Elphaba in the original show immediately wanted to tell Glinda she was alive (with Fiyero talking her out of it — which may not be a thing that happens anymore); and just IMAGINE how poignant heartrending it would be if Glinda were to find the old Emerald City guide with the note she wrote her in it, but with "I hope you get what your heart desires" in it in Elphie's handwriting, or something like that. Maybe even with Glinda singing her final "Good News!" after seeing it — leaving the door open that Glinda might have a chance to find her Elphie someday. Or hell, if they wanted to they could use the closing lines of the book in some form: the classic "did she ever come out?" and "not yet" (which of course itself has some delightfully sapphic undertones)
4.) Mostly wishful thinking on the part of my very very sapphic ass, but... can you fucking IMAGINE if they dared to rewrite an ending where Elphaba finds Glinda and asks her one more time "come with me..."?? And then they LEAVE OZ TOGETHER??? Not as plausible an answer as the others, I know — but can't a girl dream? I mean they set it up so well, if nothing else it's THERE for them to use if they decided to have the courage. In the first movie Elphaba says "come with me" twice to Glinda: first when she asks Glinda to come with her to the Emerald City (her 𝓱𝓮𝓪𝓻𝓽’𝓼 𝓭𝓮𝓼𝓲𝓻𝓮), and lastly when she asks Glinda to come with her on her broomstick and escape (which of course Glinda refuses). If they decided to give Glinda a second chance to say yes and go with her, and this time she takes it... I mean, it would just be a really solid payoff to the material already established and obviously would also short-circuit all our gay little hearts. And the fact it's even conceivable they COULD do that is really exciting in and of itself. It isn't 2003 anymore, the stars are very on board for queerness — the only thing really reining in my hopes is the fact a major Hollywood family film blockbuster (even in 2024, sadly) usually can't bite the bullet and go full gay: BUT, who said it would have to be explicitly gay if Elphaba and Glinda leave together? Who's to say we couldn't get them And They Were Very Good Friends-ing away into the sunset together? No Homo as the plausible deniability needed to pull off the best sapphic victory in movie history? Oops, there go my hopes again, trying to defy gravity, lol

One Short Day in a nutshell
Elphie: MUSEUMS, BOOKS, I LOVE THIS PLACE
Glinda: SPAS, CLOTHES, I LOVE THIS PLACE
The residents: You think these two gay or something why they holding onto each other for dear life
Idina: Maybe we should stop them making the same mistakes we did
Kristin: You know they have too so we...I mean...they get their happy ending
Wizard watching from behind curtain: Why didn't Morrible tell me Elphaba was bringing her lover, I think they are superglued together.

Just saw Wicked for the second time, and I for once feel very happy to be in this timeline. It’s so good and shows such clear love for the source material. It really shows that making a Wicked adaptation was Jon Chu’a dream project for years before landing the role as director. Even the title card is a clear love letter to tradition of movies he is stepping into. The casting is great, next to zero complaints, and Cynthia and Ariana are incredible. While I don’t necessarily prefer a closeted lesbian read of Glinda (I don’t think the closet exists in Oz and I think her relationship with Fiyero is genuine), Ariana nailed the gay longing and heart eyes that I like to see in a Glinda. I’ve been strapped to the Gelphie train for over a decade, and I don’t plan to get off anytime soon.
The movie’s not perfect, though, and I do have some complaints. They strip back the instrumentation in a lot of the songs, relying very heavily on percussion (seriously, there is a lot of snare). For a score as iconically epic as Wicked’s, the choice is a bit baffling. It exacerbates the jerkiness of the choreography, which is not my favorite. The dancing has a lot of sharp, jarring movements where people are stomping and lunging. Maybe if the music was more orchestral or if the choreography were different or even if they had just chilled it with the stomping folio, it would be fine. But in combination it’s not my favorite.
The bit the add in the middle of One Short Day with the Wizomania performance is pretty musically weak for me. It loses the melody and the momentum of what should be a very high energy number. I get the exposition was important, but the only good part of the scene was the cameos (which I wouldn’t trade for the world).
In general there are a lot of brakes in the middle of songs for added bits, and while some work for me, others really don’t. The repeated interruptions to Defying Gravity devalue the impact a bit. I mean the leads are so talented that they can carry it, but I think the sequence could do with less cutaways to guards running down halls or breaking down doors. I like the idea of slowing several parts of the song, but the cutaways slow down the pacing enough that you kind of start to feel it when they cut the tempo.
The whole span Sentimental Man and the ending of Defying Gravity could be tightened up a bit. I’m happy that they are doing it in two parts, but I think it could have been a 2 hr movie rather than a 2 1/2 hr movie if they stopped trying to make it an action movie.

Sorry to bug you, but I had a question: as someone who's full extent of knowledge re: Oz and Wicked is "I have seen the 1939 Wizard of Oz movie, and I've been told both that the books are super crazy and Dorothy's actually gay as hell, and also been told Wicked is the secret sad gay backstory of Glinda and Elphaba." I'm surprised to learn a) that Scarecrow was a real guy, b) he and Tin Man knew each other pre-Oz movie's story, and c) he apparently dated Elphaba, so my question is: is he a "her boyfriend until it turns out she was gay and the romance was doomed" boyfriend, or was I lied to about the nature of the story of Wicked being a sad lesbian backstory?
Oh boy, a lot to unpack here so let's see if we can break this down XD
Without getting into spoilers, it's important to know the book Wicked is a very, very different thing from the musical Wicked. I admittedly had never read any of the original Wizard of Oz books beyond the first one so I don't know anything about the whole "Dorothy is gay" thing but apparently that's true? I'll leave it to others who've actually read the series to verify on that.
My comics are solely focused on the musical adaptation of Wicked and such major plot points and characters are very different from the book, and if you'd like a break down, I'll post it under the spoiler below. Although I would recommend either waiting in eager anticipation for the movie to come out this November or find a Wicked bootleg slime tutorial on Youtube if you'd like to see the theater adaptation yourself. I highly recommend doing so.
Ok, so to break it down: Yes, both the Scarecrow and the Tin Man were actual people before they become the iconic figures we know and love (at least as far as the musical is concerned) And yes, Wicked is gay as hell, and though the musical isn't nearly as gay as the book, the relationship between Glinda and Elphaba that can absolutely be read as gay.
The Scarecrow, whose name is Fiyero, was a prince who initially dated Glinda but then things happen and he falls for Elphaba instead. He breaks off his engagement to Glinda to run off with Elphaba. The two have a steamy sexy duet together but tragically the relationship is bitterly short; the Wizard's guards take Fiyero prisoner and try to torture him for information on where Elphaba is hiding. In a desperate gambit to save his life, Elphaba casts a spell on him, which turns him into a scarecrow.
Also Fiyero and the Tin Man (who in the musical is Boq) went to university together so they sort of know each other. In fact, all four of them went to school together, which is where the majority of Act 1 of the musical takes place.
The book is very, very different: Tin Man (Nick Chopper) keeps his original backstory of getting his limbs chopped off by an enchanted axe and Fiyero dies (I can't remember exactly how but probably somewhere along the lines of "Wizard's guards capture him and beat him to death"). Obviously the musical changed these things to tie all the characters together and give it a bit of a happier ending.
I do not blame you if you are now more confused than before.

Just saw Wicked, emotions ahead
Wicked has finally premiered in this backwards country i live in, and after 2 weeks of dodging spoilers online, i've finally got the chance to watch it! Spoilers ahead!
First of all, miss Ariana Grande, I WAS NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOUR GAME! Girl played Glinda perfectly: gay and broken! I cried with the first verses of NOMTW, 'she died alone' ugh.
some of her acting choices were so subtle yet... gay! The little pause after 'we're just two friends, two good friends, two best... friends'. that was something alright, miss Grande, i see you and appreciate you!
i loved seeing their life in Shiz in more details, that's one of my favorite moments from the book, so seeing it on screen was very rewarding. What Is This Feeling was even gayer than usual, they could not fall asleep thinking about each other, i mean, come on!!!
loved ariana's own spin on popular, and again, very gay. the gelphie could not be contained, you guys
shout out to jonathan bailey's very form fitting pants in dancing through life
i was very emotional during the ozdust scene, but did not cry, i never cry on this scene, but somehow wept like a baby with one short day??? seeing kristin and idina broke me, for real. also, stephen schwartz!!
now let's talk defying gravity: it hurt so much seeing gelphie having their last argument, elphie asking glinda to join her and seeing glinda's reluctance. 'i hope you're happy, my friend' THE FEELS!
all that said, i was not a fan of how they broke down the song into sections, i felt there was way too much dialogue and it made it less impactful? idk just think once elphaba is flying, the song should've continued without any pause
anyway much to ponder, but excited to catch up on all the art i've missed these past 2 weeks!

The only way I will accept the cat fight in part 2 is if it is played so straight it becomes a gay tragedy.
Let me explain.
In the stage version, the cat fight is usually played for laughs as a moment of comic relief in the middle of a lot of drama. It comes as a break between Elphaba losing Nessa and Fiyero being captured as some much-needed levity.
But imagine: Glinda slaps Elphaba. Elphaba cackles but her heart isn’t in it. Elphaba slaps Glinda. Suddenly they lunge at each other, wand and broom clashing. They are sparring; striking and blocking with increasingly desperate movements as they both try to hurt each other and can’t. One of them slips through a block but stops just short of striking. Eventually they end up on the ground, no longer really fighting just…tousling. Weapons abandoned, wrists gripped, knees between thighs. Dresses torn. Elphaba's hat tossed aside.
They stop, panting, Glinda astride Elphaba in a dark callback to Popular. The pain in Glinda’s eyes as she looks down at her friend. Because Elphie left her again. Again, she chose Fiyero over her. Again, Glinda is Not That Girl.
And she can’t have Elphaba the way Fiyero can. Not after everything she’s done.
And just as Elphaba sees all of this, realizes that she broke her promise again and moves to say something, the guards arrive.

just saw the wicked film so gonna talk about my favourite bits :)
some spoilers below
i cried when the munchkins had glinda torch the wicked witch thing. like noo thats her gf :(
when i heard cynthia singing for the first time- if i werent already gay i wouldve becomr so right there and then
i'd heard this fiyero was very flirty with both men and women. but nothing, NOTHING couldve prepared me for the utter cunt and bisexuality that man emitted. he even had me, an ace lesbian, whipped
holy fuck i gasped when kristen and idina appeared. and they started singing a part of elphie's and glinda's bit in one short day, i cried omfg
jeff goldblum is fucking iconic as the wizard
extra shoutout to:
cynthia being fucking gorgeous
cynthia having the most wonderful voice
fyero's cunt-serving
respectful treatment of wheelchair users :)
nothing could have prepared me for how utterly gay glinda and elphie were in this, and thats coming from someone who has seen the musical live as well as clips from other performances and has been a hardcore shipper since day 1, and id already heard a lot of how gay it was. it was still even gayer than i'd thought/expected

WICKED ON THE WEST END!!!
I went to see a matinee performance of Wicked on the west end today, meaning I can now add Alexia Khadime and Lucy St. Louis to the list of incredible women who have altered my life and ruined my mascara (slight exaggeration but it sounds good) through their portrayal of my favourite gay witches.
Also: I missed NOMTW and had to watch the Wizard and I and half of what is this feeling on a shitty TV feed because of transport issues- Fuck TFL
Here is a collection of thoughts/ observations from the performance:
-I haven't seen the musical live since 2019 and I forgot just how amazing it is live in general. If you ever get the chance to see the show in person it is WELL worth it. The lights, the music, the costumes, all so incredible. Particularly when the lights came on for the emerald city at the start of one short day. I don't know what it was but it was just so amazing. Also the costumes look so much better when you can actually see them in front of you. The little twinkles in every single one of Glinda's costumes that you just can't see on camera and then it gets even better in act two. (side note, there are DEFINITELY holographic sequins on the bubble dress and they're gorgeous)
-One thing I remember from seeing the show when I was 11 is that the Oz head was so UNGODLY LOUD. Every time it came on stage after I heard it speak for the first time I covered my ears until it was gone. Idk if my noise tolerance has gotten better or if the Oz head has actually gotten quieter, but it wasn't nearly as bad this time. Like, I remember when he called the guards, the 'Yes, your Ozness' was actually louder than the head itself
-I always thought that the popular dress didn't have a matching purse the way the shiz and one short day costumes do but maybe it does??? She was definitely holding a bag during the scene when she was getting ready with Pfannee and Shenshen and I'm pretty sure it was a unique one. But then she only had it for that tiny scene so idk
-The bubble wand does seem to be different on the West End to the one on Broadway. It's more like... 3 dimensional? If that makes sense. It kind of projects outwards around the centre in more of an orb rather than the bits all sticking out in more of a disc like on Broadway
-There are a few minor changes to the script on the West End. Mostly just English-ifying it slightly. The only things I noticed were Glinda saying 'we all went to uni together' instead of 'school', Madame Morrible said 'sorcery tutorial' rather than 'seminar' and Glinda said 'thanks awfully' to Fiyero rather than 'thanks plenty' in thank goodness
-Lucy St Louis is VERY GOOD at that thing where you make it sound like ur about to cry (idk if there's a word for it) and her Glinda made me very sad at all the points where it's supposed to- I almost cried during thank goodness, for good and the finale. Also she held 'Because' for quite a while and she went very high with it- sounded absolutely gorgeous
-On the topic of the singing, both actresses were just so amazing. No good deed and for good were standouts but they sounded incredible for the whole show
-I was pretty sure that when I saw Wicked for the first time in 2019 (6 years ago yesterday, in fact) that during march of the witch hunters, when Morrible and Glinda are talking/arguing/whatever that interaction would be called, I saw Morrible grab Glinda by the wrist and fully yank her hand off the railing. I remembered being quite shocked by it in the theatre because something about it just seemed so violent. I wasn't sure if I was misremebering it because I hadn't seen any other Morribles do it but I think it might actually just be another West End thing. When I saw it today, not only did this happen, but it was actually worse than I remember it being. Morrible held onto her wrist for some time, and then moved her hand back and forth to forcibly make her wave to the witch hunters. Then she practically threw her hand back down. So, yeah, 11 year old me was right about that and it was actually more messed up than I remember it being. (I know this isn't that violent but it is kind of alarming to watch, like something about it is just so unsettling)
